Projects

Assessing Traffic Management Systems
As the principal investigator, John is leading the creation of guidelines for assessing capabilities and performance of existing Traffic Management Systems through a FHWA project.

Measuring Effectiveness of Connected Work Zone Devices
John was PI for a research project to identify measures of effectiveness for ODOT’s connected (or smart) work zone devices, identify data sources, and recommend a path for ODOT to scale and standardize their connected work zone implementations.
Final Report
VDOT Dynamic Incentivization (DI) Project
John serves as the technical lead for the DI project under the innovative VDOT Regional Multi-Modal Program program. This active project is implementing an advanced user-centric active demand management congestion-mitigation framework to incentivize alternate commuting options. As an owner-rep, John serves on the project management team bridging the gap between the public stakeholders and technology providers.

I-670 SmartLANE
The I-670 SmartLANE was ODOT's first hard shoulder running implementation. John was responsible for the Concept of Operations, TMC operator training, and measuring corridor improvements.

The new ODOT Traffic Management Center opened in 2019. The facility included a larger footprint, new technology, and improved workstations. John coordinated the facility demands and logistics.

ODOT released a new TSMO Program Plan to find practical solutions to address immediate safety and congestion problems. John oversaw the TSMO Plan, TSMO Program, and first TSMO office.
